Upgrading an Active Directory Forest to Windows Server 2016

  1. The current forest and domain functional levels should be at least Windows Server 2008.
  2. To prepare the AD DS forest, run adprep /forestprep on a domain controller in your existing forest.This will also prepares the AD DS schema.
  3. To prepare the AD DS domain, run adprep /domainprep on a domain controller in your existing forest.
  4. Install Windows Server 2016 on a server computer, and then add the Active Directory Domain Services server role.
  5. Promote the Windows Server 2016 server computer as a new domain controller in an existing domain
