Posted by: Ashwin Venugopal

Once you have deployed the first Windows Server 2016 domain controller, you can migrate the existing AD DS operations master roles (previously known as FSMO roles), held by other domain controllers.

GUI Method

  1. Schema master (forest wide).
    1. Use the Active Directory Schema snap-in tool to transfer.
  2. Domain naming master (forest wide).
    1. Transferred using the Active Directory Domains and Trusts snap-in tool to transfer.
  3. PDC Emulator (domain wide).
    1. Use the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in tool to transfer.
  4. RID master (domain wide).
    1. Use the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in tool to transfer.
  5. Infrastructure master (domain wide).
    1. Transferred using the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in tool to transfer.
Windows PowerShell

  • Move-ADDirectoryServerOperationMasterRole
    • Move-ADDirectoryServerOperationMasterRole -Identity "DomainControllerName" -OperationMasterRole PDCEmulator
    • DomainControllerName is the server to which PDC emulator master will be moved.
